![]() ![]() Ginger and some woody aromachemicals move into a base of ambrox and clean musks, something pretty new in 2009 for sure. Majoram round this up, and a bit of dry medicinal lavandin brings the masculine clean into the heart. Here, we have a nice juicy clementine orange and tangelo fruit medley crossed with neroli, achieved for cost with a number of synthetics at least for the neroli if not the orange. Rodrigo Flores-Roux was still very much unofficial house perfumer during this period of Varvatos production, on something of a permanent loan from Givaudan to Varvatos while they were under Shiseido distribution, something that ended sometime after EA Fragrances picked up the license and began abusing it with over-researched and marketing-driven garbage (see the JV x NJ line). I sorta call this the "4711 effect", and it's something I like to avoid outside a traditional cologne. That said, I think this is at least competent for a discount price, even if you'll end up draining the 4.2 oz bottles a lot faster than you might suspect with needed reapplication throughout the day. ![]() I'm personally not the biggest fan of this house and I have tried many, including flankers of this before finally getting around to the original itself, so I had a bit of familiarity and tempered expectations going in. The scent is rather short-lived and weak by the performance standards of most modern "cologne bros" but such is the case with most of the Varvatos house to begin with, since Varvatos doesn't like strong fragrances and prefers them to be more of a second-skin. But rather than a tidal wave of invigoration, it washes over you gently, with an undercurrent of herbal and floral notes that draw you in – and a masculine base in its depths.Artisan by John Varvatos (2009) is a staple and surprisingly non-aquatic fresh fragrance that kicked off the long-legged line of the same name, with a now-iconic wicker wrap around the standard Varvatos bottle. The perfect smell for dressing up when hitting a beach party but equally as comfortable as a reminder of the warmer months when it’s the exact opposite outside.Īrtisan Acqua puts you in mind of being beside the Med (plus the bottle looks like it’s been caught in a fisherman’s net). After 10 minutes this softens and leaves a lingering sense of what summer would be if only you could bottle it up. It’s a powerful smell - intensely musky and very masculine. The citrus top notes hit first but dig a little deeper to find accents of coriander, sage and basil. This is the summer of citrus and woody fragrances and it’ll come as no surprise to anyone that John Varvatos is bang on trend. It's a clean, refreshing, everyday-wear fragrance, reminding you of very relaxed summer days watching trawlers come into harbor.Īrtisan Acqua screams man before you’ve even popped the cork. The first thing that came to mind when spraying on the new Artisan Acqua was Sean Connery at the beach in Thunderball. Opening with light, fruity notes of mandarin and angelica root, it works best when applied liberally. The bottle not only looks great, but also singles this scent out as the perfect holiday fragrance for any time of year. It’s already the summer’s must-have fragrance. It’s a fresh, uplifting scent that gives way to something darker and more Italian as the liquid dries down and reveals its true, evocative nature. More nautical than a Breton top and with the summer connotations to match, John Varvatos’ Mediterranean-inspired fragrance delivers on many levels. Moving forward from the previous Artisan and Artisan Black fragrances, this Mediterranean-inspired scent brings the intricate designs and unique Italian hand finishing reminiscent of the designer’s Artisan approach to life. Confidence, creativity and passion bottled: the three pillars of the 21st Century high-flying male are all evoked by Artisan Acqua’s invigorating citrus and woody aroma. ![]()
